My very first panel was last year at Pure Spec and it was a nice change-up from some of the larger shows & festivals. It had a little something for everyone and was very walkable for our family & small children.
This year looks to be no different with returning guests & vendors, as well as a whole new lineup of nerdy all-stars.

Returning for its fourteenth year, the Pure Speculation Festival is set to once again celebrate science fiction and fantasy storytelling in all its forms! Join us June 15 and 16 at the Alberta Avenue Community Hall (9210 118 Avenue) for a weekend packed with panels, demonstrations, reptiles, art, stories, music, dance, zombies, and games.
Featuring Guests of Honour Krista D. Ball (author), Candas Jane Dorsey (author and publisher), and Sam Maggs (author and Pop Culture expert), along with a host of writers and artists from Edmonton’s science fiction and fantasy community.
Organized by nerds for nerds, the Pure Speculation Festival is dedicated to creating an inviting and inclusive community event, open to everyone who loves science fiction and fantasy popular culture.
Admission to the festival is free to all members of the public, so you can bring your family or attend with a group of friends and join in the celebration! The festival plays host to some of Edmonton’s nerdiest vendors, artists, and publishers, such as Variant Edition Comics + Culture, Reveal Books, illustrator Chris Moet, and Elements Games & Collectibles. You can stop by Dragon Paw Lady Face Painting to get your face painted (and your kids, too), or if zombies are more your thing, let the Nightmare Circus Performers teach you “Thriller!” and get some zombie make-up. Plus the festival offers a variety of panels and demos, on everything from Archeogaming 101 to Witches in Fiction, with stops at Parasol Dueling or a Star Trek Trivia Contest (hosted by Minister Faust) in between.
Winding down this celebration of nerdery is the return of the Internerd BBQ, hosted by the festival and welcoming nerdy groups from all over Edmonton. Entertainment will be provided by singer/songwriter Vanessa Cardui, along with the SF-inspired dance of Eclipse Fusion. Besides good food and good company, the evening will also feature the Second Annual Pure Speculation SF Mastery Quiz.
